But when it comes to the mechanics, I genuinely wonder if a lot of people look at complicated design as a "challenge." Like if it's hard, that means they have to master it. But to me that shouldn't apply to UI. Just gameplay. Because I love the souls games which are

all about mastering timing and learning opponents moves and the time to strike. But this? This is just obstinate design. And I worry a whole lot of people just confused the two. Or who the heck knows. Maybe the enjoy the tedium.

I'm less than 10 hours into the game, but it feels like it has no direction whatsoever(outside of mentioning past events which might come back), does it get better or is it going from A->B->A 24/7? Like, what does the story evolve into beyond them being outlaws and hiding?

Also havent played the first one, I blindly bought into the hype and so far, I'm just so indifferent about it(and I agree with you that most of the game mechanics, hunting and the base stuff fucking sucks). Like, if they just killed off the main character I wouldnt care at all.

Kirk's review calls the game intentionally a slog There's an argument to be made here about whether or not games need to be "fun," and I'd say they don't but they at least need to be engaging, and from the sound of it RDR2 is neither (gonna be fair here and say I haven't played)

Yeah, sadly the standard for storytelling in AAA games is so generally low anything that gestures in the direction of telling a "serious" story often gets far more credit than it deserves.
-
Especially since a lot of the best story-telling in games is often in lighter-hearted or fantastical fare that people are often insecure about liking so they overcompensate by praising anything even superficially "mature" and "grounded" to the heavens.
