I agree with most of your statements unfortunately. I’m not hating it, I just don’t feel like playing it for long periods of time and when I go back to it, it’s like I have to talk myself into doing so... I hope I start caring more, but at least it’s gorgeous to look at.
There's a difference between understanding a dynamic and understanding the psychology of your main character. So far it's ALL posture.

OK, so John Marston’s psychology was immediately apparent so... that makes a better game? I’m not that far, maybe I’ll agree on some level later on... but what they’re doing with the prolonged intro seems quite purposeful & effective from where I’m standing.

Oh, and that dynamic is about character, was my point; the strained trust of the loyal #2 to desperate leader of a gang down on its luck, who is weighing personal need for vengeance vs gang’s best interest... that’s pretty good stuff! And it pays off within 1st 3-4 hours.
