The only manuals I ever read were ones like Sid Meier's Pirates! where the antipiracy was based on clues in the manual.

as someone who grew up a few years after - Never rally saw any NES manuals or boxes, just old cartridges inherited from garage sales and EB games. Finding these materials digitized online as an adult has been a revelation, so much cool art & lore hidden in those little booklets

The Final Fantasy II (SNES) manual listed items that didn't exist in the game. It's why I don't attempt to complete games. Wasted hours trying to get non existent drops.
