New Column! Time to talk about Keanu Reeves and the prism of what we consider “Good Acting” (bonus nic cage talk!)https://observer.com/2018/09/film-crit-hulk-keanu-reeves-and-good-acting/ …

I don't think I have ever believed a word Keanu said. He is as stilted as a circus performer in every single scene he is in. I do agree that his physical performances are hugely impressive and worthy of praise.

I believe his characters are stilted but the emotions are true, especially in his eyes, does that way of seeing it make sense?

Not really? I am trying to use the standard you use, an actor with no range, but complete sincerity in what they are doing, and I keep thinking Jason Bateman, who has played the same put upon straight man in everything, but I never think of him as reading a script.

But, Keanu, everything he says sounds like someone reading lines.

Lets it put it this way. A looooooot of people disagree with you. I know you are having a visceral reaction to this. But you might be surprised by how you react if you decided to embrace it differently.

I'm probably not reacting to this with the fire you might expect. It is more of a squinting, "I respectfully disagree". Honestly, I am trying to think, "who would I cast instead of Keanu for some of his movies?" and then thinking how that would work, and it is always better.

Like, "Devil's Advocate", I mentally replace him with Edward Norton, and the movie gets better in my mind's eye. Or, "Constantine" gets Jude Law, and it gets better. I never really think, he is the best person for the roles he gets. Except John Wick.
