Interestingly, a LA reader/consultant told me in November, in my last script didn’t think the (main) protagonist was controlling the action enough. In both the move from the first and second act, the protagonist makes a firm and conscious decision from which there is no return

I think there are plenty of good movies where the (main) protagonist is not always controlling the action. Frodo (LOTR) and Ripley (Aliens) come to mind. Sometimes a change of pace from formula is welcome

I find it's often about the back and forth. You want forces turning the proverbial screws of anguish, but the character always makes decisions about what to do within those circumstances.
