McCain The Politician was an inherent contradiction. He chose Palin on a reckless whim but then was one of the only people to try and keep her populism in check. He purported to be an aisle crosser, and yet he presided over one of the more racist, backwards states in the nation.

Sure, though he didn't "preside" over Arizona. He represented it. He wasn't the governor. He didn't have any control over how Arizona was run, though he did often bend towards their awfulness.
