Thread: It's a topic of late, but I am so god damn tired of men talking about "debate." And yes, it's almost always men.

Debate only works when two people are working toward a mutual goal of solving a problem / trying to come up a productive answer. That's what it's for.

Yet, I see the same cavalcade of insecure men try to whip "debate me!" around like a sword, pretending we're all afraid of their cerebral acumen.

Which means they don't realize this just shows their obvious insecurity: they're threatened by intelligence, so they assume we'll feel threatened as well, especially if they shout loud enough about how smart they are.

Do I like interesting, fruitful conversation? Heck yeah. But I literally have no interest in "debate." And I make arguments for a living. But that means I know where it makes sense and where it doesn't. And most "debate" is not worth pursuing.

Heck, the second you even use that verbiage of wanting debate, you belie your intent. Because wanting someone to debate you means you want 1) validation 2) to be put on the equal level with the people you're annoying and

          3) Would likely bend fact, reason, itself to validate yourself in actual said debate and 4) the whole challenging is really just a tool to get you what you want to feel, all because you can call them an intellectual coward when they say no.

It is a delusional shortcut to make yourself feel powerful. And when people don't want to debate you? It's not cowardice. It's just not wanting to waste our time with the kind of guy who shit his pants just to spite the people around him.

But sticking to that belief allows you to go on fostering your delusion you're the smartest little boy in the in the universe. And that's never the point of dialogue.

Even to those of you who genuinely think what you're doing is innocent when you challenge people to debates, it's not innocent, its insipid. It's indicative of the same weird, egocentric cerebral myopia that plagues the Rick + Morty uberfan.

And look, believe me, I understand insecurity, I understand the way human beings can want to appear smart, to connect, and to be likable, along with all the different harmful ways we bargain to try and feel that way.

But to turn all that insecurity into malice and combativeness? To try and find a sense of validation through that same malice and superiority? Especially when you not so coincidentally aim that at women and POC?

Yeah, you can take that disingenuous sentiment and go the F away. Debate is malice and combativeness. Conversation is kindness. Always come at it with love. Because people can feel that. <3 HULK
