1. It absolutely humanizes the german they capture. 2. the ultimate point of that character having to rejoin the front lines is an extremely dark point about war, but let's not call it propaganda, especially because 3. they're fighting nazis. So let's not give it more credence.

1-he (Willy) is shown as a guy who lies about his ideology when captured and even betrays/kills the one person who let him live. Behind his back. (Also, the suffering and gore from american soldiers is amplified, as for german is pratically non-existent)

2&3- agree and nothing but dispise for that hateful ideology. However, there are several hints in the film that make me think that we (audience) are supposed to hate and not feel any kind of empathy for the average german soldier
