It's a direct metaphor for the prison system (which is constantly undercutting competition because of free labor) and the dehumanization of black men.

Right, I got that. I guess I was more confused about how things went back to normal again briefly after the riot only for Cash to finally, um, *turn* at the end. Like what is being said about Cash there? That he didnt care until then? I realize this would be easier to get into

I mean logically, we were never told how long it would take to "work" and they set up the not knowing - and the point is of course the evil dude would make him do it involuntarily. And it's about how they'll always come for you, always try to dehumanize, esp. if you're winning.
