Go beyond the notion of responsibility. Of course they're responsible for it. They know this. But there's also a lot of horrible things that drive people to addiction. The problem is your archaic stance is not the healthy kick in the pants you believe it to be.

Just because everyone is entitled to their opinion does not mean everyone is entitled for their opinion to be right. People are being strident about this issue because what you said does not reflect what ACTUALLY helps people with addiction. If you hope ppl get help, then help.

And that starts with actually reading the scientific, psychological, and addiction experts on the topic, who will readily tell you that the things you are saying with your opinion are incredibly damaging.
