Ah! But to me, it was obvious! And that’s the thing, right? Different people learn to read context differently... and men (specifically) tend to assume that their feedback is always welcome to women (specifically), regardless of their level of expertise!

I really don't believe this was a male vs female issue. I will accept that perhaps game devs/designers would have a different perspective, but then it's really not obvious to an outsider whether their feedback is of interest. Plenty of other devs do engage in feedback with gamers

How can you assume to know what his perspective is?

it’s not a thing he does knowingly- it’s a thing culture has taught men without men even realizing its a thing they’re taught. And he was repeating a common pattern of the way men and women interact with each other- *especially* common in our industry, so i see it all the time.

But it could just as easily be exactly the same way he'd interact with a male game dev?

it COULD- but *generally* men tend to listen to men more! So, over a thousand interactions, with men *most of the time* he would tend to land on “huh cool, i hadn’t thought of it that way” and with women it would be “excuse me, have you thought of trying X?”

To me, that attitude suggests that there's no way for a male to make a suggestion to a female, even if they'd happily make that suggestion to a male. I don't agree that that's a good place to be.

oh! cool! I have an easy solution for you! “hey, I have a thought for you, but I don’t want to assume- are you looking for feedback?” Also be aware of your level of expertise in the subject, relative to hers. If you’re untrained and she’s highly trained, hold it!

Another solution is to be up-front if you're not interested in general feedback.

I am aware of sea-lioning. Even the Wikipedia definition is "pursuing people with persistent requests". This was a single set of a response; not pursuing, and not persistent...
