I love The World's End, but I've never liked the message it sends when Nick Frost's dry alcoholic character eventually gives in, drinking and seemingly gains new confidence and strength. I'd love if there was a better way to view that character move

You'd love it because it would tell a beautiful lie. The ugly truth is there is a reason some people drink and it's because it gives them confidence and strength, and battling that kind of personality addiction can be THE HARDEST. Again, it's different for everyone.

But I have a friend who went through that kind of addiction, and you have no idea how difficult it was for them, and how much it mattered to them to be understood like that. Look for empathy, not "does this portray arbitrary good and bad."
