an "unsatisfying" answer, or an ambiguous one, is always valid. Characters can be driven by mysteries where only the journey matters - where the answer, such as it is, is unfulfilling or undesirable. TLJ understands this, and so does Rey in the end - it's Kylo who doesn't.
-
Kylo attempts to use Rey's dissatisfaction - the contrast between her yearning for a mythic heritage vs the banal reality of her abandonment - to turn her to the Dark Side. TLJ is all about how our "mystery boxes" & grand theories are easily co-opted by (crypto)fascist thinking.
