I had to stop watching because I found it so miserable. I tuned in for the last 2 episodes to see how things wrapped and the parting shot of Don getting his zen on in northern California felt just as insufferable as what I’d left behind.

Sure, he finds some kind of peace....and then immediately goes back to New York and turns it into a way to shill product. It's bittersweet at best, and certainly not a redemption

I’m never going to change a mind about this. I know it. But in a show that was ENTIRELY bittersweet and filled with shitty people that didn’t feel like a bold close. I have less and less patience with shows about people who are dicks because that’s supposed to be more interesting

Of course I agree that awfulness doesn't automatically equal watchability (that's my entire beef with SUCCESSION). But MAD MEN did the work, and created complex characters who evolved.

I'm mostly digging in here because characterizing the show as romanticizing Don is really ungenerous. The series' entire thematic project is undermining nostalgia!

Yeah – I think people say that because Jon Hamm was good looking. If anything the show went out of his way to remind you what a horrible asshole he was most of the time.

I didn’t use the word romanticize. I think the pure time spent examining a character - Don - who’s just miserable and constantly going to win because of his status in life is god awful boring and also lame. And watching those last few episodes, Don seemed VERY THE SAME.

Yeah and I’m not here to change a mind. You live with these characters for YEARS and that bond - good or bad - isn’t going to be changed by my tweets for sure. I just will die on the hill of “Fuck Don Draper” for good.

Afraid to jump in, but it gets at a deeper thing I think a lot about... I think it's 100% valid to stop watching / have no interest in watching a show that explores a certain kind of subject matter. Especially the kind of subject matter that has it's "bad fans."

But the inherent problem with any kind of deeper critical engagement is that it has to reflect the text of the piece. And Mad Men, for a lot of valid criticism especially the shows meta-contexts, was still dead-on in its ability to articulate his assholery and its cost on others.

In other words, it was responsible enough to its own text and I think was saying "fuck don draper" as much as anyone, but when it comes to how much we want to participate alongside the misery? Especially for shows that could embolden bad fans?

Well that's our own valid choice. And some miseries cut closer to the bone than others. I'm not sure this is all fair. I've just been thinking about it.
