In his mystery box presentation he literally says the answer doesn't really matter. It's just about drawing people in. The problem is that in storytelling the answer is THE MOST IMPORTANT PART. It is literally the point of what you are saying and communicating and how.

Sometimes, you just have to come at things head on and set up the answer you're going to dramatize in spades. Because often it is the best way to make a great moment of character catharsis truly sing.

I feel like there a lot of criticism of TLJ that stem from stuff being set up as a mystery in TFA which really shouldn't have been e.g. 'Who is Snoke?'

I love hoe TLJ just moved from that. In a similar way as Kylo Ren's sub-Vader outfit/voice. One snarky 'you are just a kid in a mask', then boom it's gone and a more whole character emerges from behind it too. I do hope

I would have found it more interesting if Kylo said he didn't know; maybe no one knows. The silhouettes were wierdly obscured, so I thought it was being hidden on purpose. Lies and deception are the ways of the Dark Side.
