When I moved out here I got a couple of kick-ass internships. They were unpaid, but they were great places to be. Every other person there was rich. Every one of them being supported by their parents. Meanwhile, I ran out of all the money I spent years saving pretty damn quickly.

A very good point. I started as unpaid intern for years on various film sets but only cause I was damn lucky to have my parents support me. Not wealthy but managed & w/out them no way would’ve been able to do it. Many not as fortunate.

Most European countries have laws that guarantee a minimum stipend for internships. It’s not great but it’s not free. The free American internship thing is deeply skewed towards the rich.

I had one, sometimes two, unpaid internships every semester of film school. They were high profile and I wouldn’t be here today without them. I could do this because I added $20k to my student loan to cover living expenses on top of the full cost of NYU tuition + housing. Fucked.
