When I moved out here I got a couple of kick-ass internships. They were unpaid, but they were great places to be. Every other person there was rich. Every one of them being supported by their parents. Meanwhile, I ran out of all the money I spent years saving pretty damn quickly.

I could make enough for rent playing poker on weekends (it's not a romantic or cool story, just an exploitative vegas thing). I was deeply lucky. If it wasn't able to stay at those internships, I wouldn't have gotten more opportunities that ended up setting me down this path.

The point is simple. Unpaid internships only embolden the wealthy who can afford not to be paid money for doing actual work. Pay people.
