Well-written and admirable attempt not to be dismissive of opposing viewpoints. I do question that you seem to imply that there are basic rules of structure and storytelling, yet you also appear to assert that all criticism is subjective? Is there a way to prove a thing is "bad?"

If so, and you're up for a spirited debate, I'd urge you to check out MauLer's critique of TLJ on YouTube. He seems to have grown as tired of the feelings-based back-and-forth over actual merits as you have... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vw7pcCj0ORk …

I'd LOVE for this guy to debate MauLer. That would be awesome, and I'm sure MauLer/Callum would be up for it. He is a pretty calm and reasonable guy when it comes to debates it seems.

In my opinion, Hulk has made the best defenses for the TLJ that I've seen, and MauLer has made the best criticisms of it, so having the two of them sit down would be a great experience, I think.

In all honesty, the problem I have with that video is it's just dressing up the same misunderstands and tired criticisms in a seemingly more digestible, intellectual package, It's the jordan petersen thing. Confusing decorum with message, so it would actually be hard to debate.

Again, so much of this comes down to language. I don't know how to debate someone about character arcs if we can't even agree on what character arcs *are* Does that make sense? Also, I'm kind of tired of the over the overwhelming need to debate. I wrote the essay so I could stop.

Well I agree that no one should feel compelled to debate. However, I don't think that the arguments and debates simply cease just because you wrote an article and deem the argument to now be over. That seems a little arrogant of you, to be honest.

There are still counter-arguments that can be made, even to your article. No matter how thorough your article was, it was not comprised of 100% objective truths. If you have no wish to debate this further, that's fine, but I don't think your article alone ends the argument.

I know. I've said as much. That's not what I'm trying to do. Just understand how valid it is to be so, so, so very tired of the Sealioning with people all wanting to be debated when I've been doing that for 6 months and just birthed a mini-book on the the product of that.

And then for people to be like "yes, but [insert comment I directly accounted for already]!" it would be one thing if this was a book tour. But I gotta get to work on other stuff now. It's not that the convos over. It's that I have to pick my battles.

Yeah, that's perfectly fair. Maybe someone out there will make a public response to your article or something at the very least. If that were to happen, I'd be interested to see what discussion ensues from that person's arguments, for better or worse.
