Well-written and admirable attempt not to be dismissive of opposing viewpoints. I do question that you seem to imply that there are basic rules of structure and storytelling, yet you also appear to assert that all criticism is subjective? Is there a way to prove a thing is "bad?"

If so, and you're up for a spirited debate, I'd urge you to check out MauLer's critique of TLJ on YouTube. He seems to have grown as tired of the feelings-based back-and-forth over actual merits as you have... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vw7pcCj0ORk …

I'd LOVE for this guy to debate MauLer. That would be awesome, and I'm sure MauLer/Callum would be up for it. He is a pretty calm and reasonable guy when it comes to debates it seems.

In my opinion, Hulk has made the best defenses for the TLJ that I've seen, and MauLer has made the best criticisms of it, so having the two of them sit down would be a great experience, I think.

In all honesty, the problem I have with that video is it's just dressing up the same misunderstands and tired criticisms in a seemingly more digestible, intellectual package, It's the jordan petersen thing. Confusing decorum with message, so it would actually be hard to debate.

If you are so confident that these are misunderstandings and tired criticisms then why not just do it? Outside of time constraints and logisitical concerns like that, of course. If you want to help put this whole TLJ thing to bed as per your article, a solid debate might help.

No. It really wouldn't. It would require me to sit down and for 45 minutes to go back and explain the basic notion of what what a character arc is and how it functions before we ran out of time and got to actual meat of discussion.

There are so many fundamental story misconceptions in that and reactions to mere texture, that I'd have to unpack each and every single one. And why sit down and agonize over that, when I can keep editing my book that tackles those very core notions and put that into the world.

You can see what I'm getting at here? It's about the deeper problems. I wrote my essay. It's not that I don't think that more can come out of dialogue, it's just that I'm interested in the dialogues that productively forward more understanding. Hence, the book.

Fair enough. I just think that a debate on Youtube could help your perspective gain traction in a way that your article didn't (no disrespect to Observer). And I just feel that MauLer has a better handle on the criticisms than others do, even if you still feel they are flawed.

Not that it matters, but to clarify a point in this regard and my interest in doing so, my bigger articles get a lot more readers than that video so I'm not exactly worried about traction.

Oh sure, I meant more in terms of your message reaching other people that it might not otherwise have. I was not implying that you were lacking viewership and that doing a video would get you that viewership.
