@FilmCritHULK how do you rectify both of these pieces of writing?pic.twitter.com/kxvcOlJOoU
On one level, I don't. One is from a piece I wrote 7 years ago when I was still leaning into "hulk angry!" territory I thought people wanted, but didn't quite reflect who I want to be inside, which is a big part of growing up. I wouldn't write like that now. It's too sarcastic.
And on another level, that piece at least still goes into extreme detail about the many problems I have with the story choices of the prequels and the larger overall point about being able to fix a film with a single choice is valid.
But don’t you think that this kind of reflects the toxicity and lack of trust in a filmmakers vision that you are now castigating? Do you think that you and your peers may be in some way responsible for the current culture? Is it not a little hypocritical to play both sides
You're confusing a lot of things here. The problems with the prequels are not about indulgence. The problems are are manifold, and to boot, the character of jar jar is also flirts with a lot dangerous racism. I'm not "playing both sides" I've been on one political side always BUT
you do raise an important point on the way things are add into culture. If you think I want to divorce myself from a history of star wars fandom, of course not. When I was little I indulged in Luke like most. The whole point is I learned to grow out of the dangerous parts.
I mean, Growing up IS learning to contradict your past self. And if you think I ever EVER felt strong enough to abuse an actor merely for taking a part, then you misunderstand everything I'm after here.
Certainly - growing up is learning to contradict yourself. But I do think that an important element of “toxic Nerd culture”, which is being written about so constantly and breathlessly by you and others, is how much it was fostered by nerd media and reviewers....
.... many of whom, like you, are now writing long treatises castigating what they themselves helped foster and acted as a role model for
I can't speak for anyone else, but again, we're confusing too things. I've been talking about the dangers of indulgence for a long, long time. Since the beginning. I've never argued for that most toxic element of fandom. But yes, once, I said a snide thing about the prequels.
