I think the idea that there's much of a parallel is, at best, debatable - what's there is so broad and abstract, placing any intentionality in it is difficult. Not an expert on the subject, so maybe there's something I'm missing, but that's always been my read.

Lucas's generation of filmmakers were all moved by Vietnam. Coppola and Cameron, obviously, Stone and Scorcese, too. It's woven into the fabric of their work from Aliens to Taxi Driver. I don't think it's a stretch to put Lucas with them, despite playing in the sci fi sandbox.
