TLJ did an amazing job of avoiding that trope. Yes Rey tried to save him but she realised her mistake was to assume that his turn would be easy esp as he comes wth years of emotional baggage. She made an incredible decision to leave him as he needs to make that change on his own.

Would you say there is a specific difference between that and Vader's love based redemption, Hulk, re: that possible danger? Or is it just that culture obviously is both more conscious of and has more trouble acknowledging toxic romantic situations than toxic parental ones?
