Your analysis of why fans were attached to Luke because he was their stand-in was revelatory. It reminded me of how as a kid, I never really thought Luke had a happy ending in RotJ. Yes, he saved the day and I assumed he went on to train young Jedi, but (1/?)

it seemed to me that he ended up alone and sad and left to deal with the trauma of his experiences alone (though that sounds like I'm giving pre-teen me too much credit). But he doesn't end up doing what he originally wanted (fun adventure and heroics) (2/?)

And he instead is older, wiser, and burdened with a sense of duty. So I guess seeing him become old, curmudgeonly, and resentful towards his duty and filled with regret with his life decisions didn't seem like a stretch. Anyway, thank you for that, great piece!
