These aren't new fangled ideas. They are very old, damaging, ugly, possessive ones that speak to patriarchal ugliness. "He seems like a thoughtful person." That is the whole fucking danger right there. Because there's no actual thought or compassion behind them.

You say “there’s no thought or compassion behind them” as though it’s absolute fact. Are you really able to know his mind? You obviously hate what he says, but to label thoughts that you object to as “thoughtless” is not debate. It feels more like suppression to me.

For the love of god, how do people like you keep confusing people saying "this is horrible and childish and unworthy of discussion" with "suppression" of a guy who literally has a national pulpit for some damn reason. This is insanity.

You may be right. I haven’t studied everything the man has said. What I have seen him say sounds mostly quite grown up - we need to take responsibility for our own actions, for example - and in this current climate that feels quite refreshing.

Never confuse "sounding like" with being. Never.

I’m not the one making judgements here. I am deliberately not being definitive, because I really don’t have all the facts or the full context to be comfortable doing that. Absolutism is not, in my experience, a good way of moving a debate forward.

Question: Do you not make judgments about people who say it should okay not to serve black people?

Touché. Well, I rather like the approach that Sarah Silverman is using. Rather than condemn them as people for holding opinions that you find impossible to accept, try and engage them as fellow humans. Try and understand what their fears are and try and examine your own...

I get his fears. I know them. I write passionately about them all the time. But i am not going to "debate" someone who says women need to give malicious psychopaths sex to fix them. All that happens is they become the first victims. This is psychology 101. Hes dangerous.

I can’t help feeling that there are no intrinsic rules for human behaviour. Society creates its own mores, and these adapt slowly and non-uniformly. We can try and use religion to impose behaviour, as some cultures do. But, again with Sarah S, empathy is the only way that works.

You just said an absolute. Trust me, it's not the only way that works. Sometimes trolls and garbage people can be reached, sometimes, you have to go around them. But we're going to end this convo now as I just realized jennifer's still on this, I'm so sorry.
