I have to get this off my chest because it has driven me nuts for years and it keeps happening.http://screencrush.com/why-dont-people-say-goodbye-in-phone-calls-in-movies/ …

I hate this so much, too. It's right up there with [characters sit down for lunch, order food, suddenly realize they need to be somewhere else, ask for the check and leave the restaurant, without takeout bags, as if they suddenly forgot they were hungry].

This is also bad -- I don’t understand how this keeps happening!

The simple reason is that you're taught economy of story and unless goodbyes or food details are important to the story, they're utterly unnecessary. Also you'd be shocked how often you COULD say it in a given story. It's like the first thing they beat out of you in film school.

And i'm not saying it's inaccurate or that there couldn't be something gained. I'm just saying it's taken out because it's usually perfunctory and boring. The lesson most scenes need to learn is how to write the scene transition BEFORE the goodbye, so its a non issue.

And i'll say the following, I think we notice because it's nowhere in cinema, but if it was everywhere, people would be constantly talking about how it kills rhythms between conversations. It's not a therefore / but. It's perfunctory dead stop.
