This may sound obvious, but I think cinema would benefit greatly if more directors started shooting for the edit instead of shooting for the shot.

That’s one thing The Last Jedi *nailed*. Every transition is meaningful. There are so many nice, unobtrusive handshakes between scenes.

There's a great story of Hitchcock getting a complaint from an editor of strange blackouts on the rushes. He said they weren't problems, it was where I want you to cut the film. Apparently he'd wiped his hand in front of the lens during each take

On set you know the director is good if they know exactly what their edit is like. “The last line dropped focus on this take” “it’s ok that line will be cut on the wide” makes everyone’s lives so much easier!!!

I don’t know, many of the most beautifully shot films I’ve seen in recent years were also some of the best edited. Both require a similar meticulousness. I think a lot of directors are just doing everything they can to make the day, and have what they need in the editing room.

They're pros, whatever choice they'll make will look pretty darn good. I care more about "right" or "effective" if that make sense.
