I'm hoping that when I get older I won't be able to avoid it. In the kitchen, the bathtub, while playing an instrument, sitting at my computer, in flagrante delicto, and especially right after I wake up.

I had this problem for a long, long time. Still do, to some extent, especially when I'm off work, but it's leaps and bounds better since I got my hypothyroid sorted out. My sympathies to a fellow unsleeper. I don't miss it, and wish I could do anything to help.

I have that same problem. Then when I fall asleep, I wake up three or four hours later and repeat the process. I’m trying to see a doctor about it. But can’t get an appointment until August.

Instead of trying to not think about stuff, my trick is to think very hard about something that has no impact on your life, so take a plot concept you like and start to work it out, characters, the opening scene, work thru it or play some minimalist music and really listen to it

burn that mental energy while not triggering anxiety... went through it for ages, still have sleep issues, but this gets me to sleep
