Been thinking a lot about the way various expectations play into the movie going experience. New essay. Enjoy!http://observer.com/2018/06/film-crit-hulk-personal-path-to-movie-going-nirvana/ …

nice essay. i'm personally one of the people who is excited about the new Suspiria — if someone wants the color and tone of the original, there's always the Neon Demon.

My personal philosophy: 1. Once I decide to see it, I avoid all trailers, rumors, spoilers, news, etc. 2. Unless the movie is teasing whether or not it’s about a werewolf. 3. One way or the other, I MUST know if I’m getting a werewolf flick or a werewolf-fakeout flick.

I know everyone complains about the dominance of this or that, but I keep seeing this as a golden age of discovery with so much out there - if you're willing to look beyond the heavily promoted. So much joy in discovery. I went into Ex Machina cold; it changed my view of film.

Great article - just one question: how do you avoid trailers when you’re in the theater?

It seems like the price of movies (and concessions) plays a big role for people who need the movies to always match highest expectations

Loved the essay, and love your philosophy on film viewing. Have you ever seen a film that lived up to the hype a trailer set for it, back when that was a big deal to you or even now when a trailer occasionally catches your attention (assuming any of them do that)?
