I've done the Tough Love tactic only once, and it worked, because I knew it would, because I knew the person very well. Otherwise it's just... wow, fuel to the fire much?

I wrote a blog about the fact we bombard people about how they are not living life right and they need to get out regardless of what pain they have. Motivational post after motivational post saying you're not living life... but don't end your life.

It ties in to the shockingly widespread attitude of treating the death of a friend/loved one as an inconvenience instead of a tragedy.

Or even worse, as a way to get attention for themselves for how hard it is to lose that person they might not even have ever attempted to reach out to.

I think another aspect is that some people don't see mental illness as "real" illness. You don't hear the same jeers of how someone was weak or selfish if they die of a heart attack.
