With every passing year I realize "Don't Feed The Trolls" is the worst decision the internet ever came up with. We let something disgusting fester thinking it was just someone trying to get a rise out of us. It wasn't a joke. It was never a joke. It was only pure seething hatred.

It's a day later and it's amazing how many people think I'm confusing the term troll for abuser, not knowing where the term comes from and what it was intended to mean, and not getting my overall point that it was always an excuse. But whatever. Column coming on the issue.

I 100% agree with everything you've said. "Troll" goes side-by-side with the "Missing Stair" theory. Where ignoring it in the hopes it goes away and whispering to each other about the hateful pricks gave them more ability to be hateful pricks in bigger and louder ways

Trolls were never "innocent", true. But the infrastructure of the Web changed in a way that enables them to the max.

it's enabled them since 95.

It's like when I was at school being told to ignore the bullies, which just led to them trying harder until I was getting teeth punched out.

I disagree. Trolls used to practice absurdist humor, making illogical and baseless comments but knowing what they were doing. Now we call conservatives trolls b/c their arguments happen to also be illogical and baseless, yet they aren't actually trolls b/c they lack the awareness

Don't feed the trolls began as solid advice, but then conservatives were quickly able to use it as protection to expand their community as they emerged as the nearly indistinguishable counterpart to the original trolls.

"Don't feed the Trolls" and "Ignore them and they'll stop bullying you" are the same thing, and neither is good advice. If a spoiled kid throws a tantrum, tell them it's not okay. Repeatedly, or through diciplinary actions, if necessary. Same rule applies to misbehaving adults.

What do you propose as an alternative? Sometimes I argue, usually I block, sometimes I ignore, none of these methods are terribly effective. The first is certainly the most time consuming.
