With every passing year I realize "Don't Feed The Trolls" is the worst decision the internet ever came up with. We let something disgusting fester thinking it was just someone trying to get a rise out of us. It wasn't a joke. It was never a joke. It was only pure seething hatred.

I have to disagree. Trolls back in the day were just trying to incite a reaction - the word comes from the fishing phrase "trolling", where you slowly drag a lure through the water, hoping for a bite. Today's trolls are a very different breed, hoping to spread hate.
-
Are you saying it's different because even though they were still trying to make the target unhappy and take up their time, they weren't as focussed on getting others to join in?

Trolls were looking to annoy people into reactions. No abuse, no other harm than time lost and them being annoying. Abusive comments and actual harm were never labeled as being a troll. Those were considered actual punishable actions and good communities booted those ASAP.

Annoying people into reactions is abuse. It can be at least very stressful for the person being “annoyed to reactions”. That is abuse. I may seem lesser, but it’s still a form of abuse.
