With every passing year I realize "Don't Feed The Trolls" is the worst decision the internet ever came up with. We let something disgusting fester thinking it was just someone trying to get a rise out of us. It wasn't a joke. It was never a joke. It was only pure seething hatred.

Not so sure. I remember the early flame wars destroying lists while the troll sat back with satisfaction to watch the flames. What we're seeing now is something more visceral, just pure abuse.

Flame wars were sometimes literary battles, less about the ideas being discussed and more about who could turn the sweetest phrase. But they, too, were often filled with hate because people who weren’t good at writing would substitute wit for weaponized isms.
