There are smooth productions that turn out amazing and smooth productions that turn vacant and soulless. There are troubled productions that turn out confused and errant and troubled productions that turn out coherent and beautiful.

What is behind this ultimately, is just the quality of the story choices that end up in the finished film. That's it. Now, when it comes to "improv" filmmaking and "finding it in the edit" there's a lot of hubbub and misunderstanding, too.

Mostly because there are filmmakers use that as excuse to make zero decisions because they have no actual understanding of actual story mechanics. Then, there are those who do... Lord & Miller have a proven track record of having been able to do that.
