I played #TheBigDig with some non-gamer family members tonight. It’s not as accessible as I assumed.

Yeah, it makes me wonder how much work I want to do to make it more non-gamer friendly. The adults had trouble, but my 8-year old nephew’s picked it up quickly. They play Pokémon so they are gamers.

That's fascinating! I have two games which are really tough for non-gamers but kids (surprisingly) seem to really enjoy. What kind of work would you have to put in to make it more accessible?

I’m not sure. It’s too small a sample size to understand what areas I can improve in. My focus will be better on-boarding. I know that the rules were a problem, but the rules are trash right now anyways.

Gameplay wise, I can look at cutting card types, and working toward simplifying concepts. I know some of this work is important anyways, but the question of depth vs accessibility is something I’m thinking about. More-so now.

Well, on the bright side: there is no perfect balance between depth and accessibility. Which makes knowing your target audience critical. So, do whatever's right for them. If you don't have one, just make it fun for you and worry about details later.
