Lighting in digital painting can be overwhelming for students. My approach is to compartmentalize the scene into a miniature set. Turn on one light at a time and focus on creating contrasts. Here are three lighting schemes using stage lighting (raw unlit photo on upper right).pic.twitter.com/fGYKc452Q4

These images are done using the same technique. Practice with photos with flat & overcast lighting (usually taken from 9am-4pm, when the sun is directly above). Switch the lighting to magic hour (when the sun is near the horizon, thus creating hot key lights with long shadows.pic.twitter.com/qqAMQOkXIx

Little infographic pieces like this are SO helpful! Environments and environment lighting is still something I struggle with to a great degree but seeing this has given me a great way to study and practise lighting a scene by spending time lighting little “set” scenes. So good!

That's a real good lighting illustration there - almost simulation look. (IRL I do Architectural Lighting Design)
