    The government's handling of the fallout this week has been embarrassing, particularly on the part of Boris Johnson. To infer from such incompetency that the government is at the head of a multifaceted and sophisticated conspiracy is odd, to put it politely.

    My perspective: academia is not a meritocracy. There are far more talented, hardworking ppl than there are TT jobs, which means that much of who gets those jobs comes down to luck. Luck with your advisor, luck with data, luck with publishing, luck with the market, luck luck luck.

    I don't know many people in academia who didn't struggle in one way or another to find a footing. But I know a lot of people whose perspective on that struggle seems both stuck in the particular moment that they went through it and narrowed by the fact that they succeeded.

    i just found out that humans are capable of fitting a lightbulb into their mouth with ease but cannot take it out without shattering it and now i have to physically restrain myself from putting a light bulb in my mouth
