The ‘Great Astronomical Observatory of China’ [Grande osservatorio astronomico della Cina] by the visionary, eccentric and cinematic avant la lettre Antonio Basoli (1847)
Conversation
It looks like a modernist sculptural composition, but in fact it’s the astronomical observatory of Jaipur, designed by Maharaja Jai Singh ll, an astronomer himself, and built between 1728 and 1734. The photograph was taken in 1952 by Werner Bischof

Another favourite observatory: the Einsteinturm (Einstein Tower) in Potsdam, designed by Erich Mendelsohn and built between 1919 and 1921
