Any idea what these things are? Sort of looks like a parabolic dish with a huge electrical filament in it

If I'm not mistaken, this is Denge, a former Royal Air Force site near Dungeness, in Kent, England, known for its early experimental acoustic mirrors. And I suppose the name of the series comes from these 'acoustic mirrors'

That's interesting. There was an old Biggles movie with something probably inspired by these. At first I thought maybe there used to be a light reflective coating but sound makes more sense.
