John Berkey's cover art for the 1972 reprint of the short story anthology Star Science Fiction Stories No. 4
A rocket-plane diving down through space towards a gigantic mechanical planet...
Does this not look all too familiar to you?
In 1975, young George Lucas purchased several pieces of Berkey's sci-fi artwork, which served him as visual reference material while he was trying to pitch his ideas to film studios for a new space fantasy film...
If Star Trek and Star Wars ship designs were on a spectrum, this is beyond Star Trek. The curves remind me of the Enterprise-D from Next Gen. Elegant, yet functional.
Interesting how "the End of the Run" by Berkey from 2001 looks similar to a 70's Science Fiction Monthy cover, reused as a cover for a 70's Hungarian sci-fi anthology book. Alas, I can't yet find its original creator. I love how ideas and shapes live in our collective mind.
