First image is Rievaulx Abbey, in Yorkshire, UK. Compare the foreground structures, arches and single round-window to the image below. There is something distinctive about the first two images that reminded me of the Abbey.

Does anyone know his medium? I want to say markers? But I feel oil was the choice medium then?

You can have this effect with either oil using a medium which levels out the brushwork (like stand oil), or gouache. The later is a prominent medium for oldschool animation backgrounds.
