Appears to me Giovanni Bellini is integrating Netherlandish influence in this painting, while retaining an essentially Italian/Venetian approach. I'm thinking of the way he sets up and presents landscape in particular here

Experts say that he took a taste for minutiae from Flemish masters such as Hugo van der Goes and Rogier van der Weyden. However, Mantegna is still the biggest ghost in this painting

Thanks Federico! We all recall Michelangelo's droll take on Northern art, that it was the sort of thing that made old ladies weep (paraphrasing from memory here). Also, Mantegna became incensed when criticized for stiffness of his figures, but now we see it as part of his charm
