Opening our dialogue - Living in the 21st century, most people are in denial of the existing practice of #FemaleGenitalMutilation. How does one break this shell of denial and address this grave real issue? @RanalviMasooma

By speaking out, by having conversations with women, girls and men. By breaking the shroud of secrecy and education and awareness building

The practice even though it is http://cultural.it  is given a religious connotation. This makes it tough to challenge. However this is NOT a religious practice. It has nothing to do with Islam

Why is there a misconception that it is a religious practice and why is the religious bodies involved in such depth?

But the fact is there is no mention of FGM in the Quran. There is no mention of this being done to the Holy Prophets wives and daughters. It is much later that this prevalent cultural practice was given an islamic connotation

Our religious leaders tell the community that cutting the clitoral hood is required and it’s very hard to refuse or question powerful authority figures. There is a risk of social shunning.

There is already resistance from the religious leaders - what about the in-community resistance from the women themselves?

I see khafz as a form of intergenerational trauma, which is normalized and passed down by those who really believe it’s necessary, normal and not harmful. Intergenerational trauma ends and we question all the lies we’ve been told about our gender and our bodies.

The only lie is that Islamic circumcision has the same as FGM harm and same reason as other non-Islamic practices in Africa and that is a lie that the likes of you, @farzanadoctor, are spreading.
