In response to news that clawed back a $105M severance from former CEO Steve Easterbrook, who was ousted in 2019 over an inappropriate relationship with a subordinate and subsequently sued for lying to investigators, the and a Union released the following:

While it has fought like hell to get back money from former CEO Steve Easterbrook for inappropriate sexual conduct, McDonald’s has ignored and dismissed survivors of workplace sexual harassment for years. Workers have been speaking out, filing complaints, and going on strike since 2016 to demand McDonald’s address its culture of harassment, but little has changed for us. In announcing the settlement with the former CEO, Board Chair Enrique Hernandez said Easterbrook apologized to former co-workers, franchisees and suppliers and said the deal ‘moves us beyond a chapter that belongs in our past.’ But nobody has ever apologized to frontline cooks and cashiers, and a statement can’t will harassment into McDonald’s past. We know McDonald’s thinks it has addressed its harassment problem, but the problem very much persists. Ask the workers in Mason, Michigan, where a serial harasser targeted teenage workers for years.
Or the workers in Pittsburgh, where a manager who was a previously convicted sex offender raped a 14-year-old. Or workers in Minnesota, where the Department of Human Rights is suing over McDonald’s failure to protect another 14-year-old employee from sexual assaults from her 24-year-old manager. McDonald’s should use the money it got back from the former CEO to develop a real plan to stop the rampant sexual harassment occuring from the drive-thrus to the C-suite. That starts with meeting with survivors and letting us drive the solution.
