    Sometimes simple maps can be effective. Here a network of tunnels in a shattered glacier. Look in the dark ice - and you’ll see lines of light vanishing into the depths. And the ice has blues, turquoise, and purples. How you fill in the rest of the map matters.

    How to use features to imply scale. I changed my mountain and forest styles completely on this map to imply the scale of the world. And removed all line art. I didn’t illustrate mountains. I illustrated mountain ranges.

    And there you have it! It’s simple enough – and when you fill a map with these you map will be full of beautiful forests. I’ve uploaded the full .psd of this tutorial file here:

    Note that all the shadows start from the base of the tree trunk – and if you draw a line between the trunk, and the tip of the shadow the lines will all be parallel.
