An excerpt from my new book « How we learn », on the 1st pillar of learning: attention modulates what we perceive and learn. With kudos to my mentor Mike Posner, attention pioneer, still very active in studying how brain connections change with training.

THIS IS TRUE “SIGHT” WORD INSTRUCTION‼️ Repeated practice to the point of OVERLEARNING will move effortful reading of words to be automatic and unconscious. Then, we can read for meaning‼️ 2/2

“It takes, on average, about three years of training for visual word recognition to move from sequential to parallel. Ultimately, our visual word form area processes all the letters of a word simultaneously rather than serially.” - Stanislas Dehaene 1/2

I needed this exact information. I have teachers using the word shape boxes. I know it is not an effective strategy but this is the "why". Honestly I used these boxes about 10 years ago. I didn't know better...now I do.

The best evidence we have is that children do better with systematic phonics instruction than without it. A recent journal article claims there is no evidence for using systematic phonics. Here I explain why is wrong. (Long read)

"What did you do as a new T that you'd NEVER do now?" Work in a school: 1. without a clear and coherent culture; 2. that had no curriculum; 3. wasn't committed to knowledge-rich literacy; and 4. doesn't understand that low expectations applies to academics AND behavior.

How do oral language and literacy work synergistically in early childhood and across the school years, into early adulthood? My Language House model tries to capture this: Feedback welcome.

This is why the F&P Benchmark Assessment is a ridiculous waste of time! The levels do not inform instruction or intervention‼️ 2/2

“The text level that this type of measurement spits out is inaccurate, arbitrary, not replicable and misaligned with the teaching material. It gives false information to parents and students ..., since it doesn’t measure growth in the key areas of literacy.” 1/2

“When a child attends to the letter level, for instance, by TRACKING EACH LETTER WITH HER FINGER, from left to right, Learning becomes easier. If, on the other hand, the child is not provided with attentional clues and NAIVELY EXAMINES THE WRITTEN WORD AS A WHOLE, 1/2

How can anyone agree with The Three Cueing System after reading this⁉️ Looking at pictures and context take the child’s attention AWAY FROM THE DETAILS OF THE WORD! “Whole-word attention directed the learning to an inappropriate circuit in the right hemisphere...” 2/2

Can’t put this book down! A couple of gems below👇 “Selective attention can orient to the right or WRONG circuit...Those who attended to the overall shape of the words did not realize that the words were made of letters, even after three hundred trials.” 1/2
