@GavinNewsom signed AB 1452 on Friday, authorizing the "Be The Jury" pilot program, a first-of-its-kind pilot in San Francisco to compensate low-income jurors $100/day for jury service.
If you care about equity in our justice system, we have to talk about juror compensation.

35% of San Francisco jurors report that jury service imposes a financial hardship. Why? 1. Employers aren't required to pay their employees for jury service. 2. If employers don't pay, jurors only receive $15/day for their service. And only after the first day of service. /2

This has huge consequences for the racial & economic diversity of our juries. Inadequate juror compensation is a hidden fee that places a price tag on jury service, and prevents juries from reflecting the diversity of San Francisco. /3https://sftreasurer.org/san-francisco-public-defender-mano-raju-san-francisco-treasurer-jose-cisneros-applaud-signing-new …

Race and economic inequality are closely tied. And as
@JustMrPhillips points out, racism has been part of the criminal legal system for centuries. Making jury service more accessible is a much-needed step towards addressing that history. /4https://www.sfchronicle.com/bayarea/justinphillips/article/Could-reparations-make-for-fairer-juries-16336201.php …1 reply 0 retweets 4 likesShow this thread
