AB 1452, a bill that would authorize the SF Superior Court to pilot higher compensation for jurors, passed out of committee yesterday! Here's why that brings us a step closer to a more just legal system. THREADhttps://sftreasurer.org/new-ca-bill-pilots-higher-compensation-low-income-jurors-san-francisco …

The right to a jury of one's peers is a pillar of our legal system. But when more than 1/3 of San Franciscans report that jury service imposes a financial hardship, it's not surprising that jurors increasingly don't reflect the economic and racial diversity of our city. /2

Employers are not required to pay their employees for jury service. And jurors whose employers don’t compensate them for service are paid $15/day, and only starting on the 2nd day of service. This severely limits who can afford to participate in a fundamental civic duty. /3

We often talk about how fines/fees can disproportionately burden low-income communities of color. Jury service currently does so in a veiled way: providing little-to-no compensation to jurors is a hidden fee that places a price tag on participation in a basic civic duty. /4

Take Elizabeth, a San Franciscan who our team interviewed, who said, “I would love to serve on a jury. It is my civic duty, but I can’t take the time off work and face not being able to make rent or eat.” Participating in jury service shouldn't be a financial burden. /5

That's where the "Be The Jury" pilot program comes in. For low-to-moderate-income San Franciscans, the pilot program will compensate them $100 a day for jury service, opening up the opportunity to serve on a jury to folks who otherwise couldn't afford to take time off. /6

We're excited by the opportunity to work with our partners @ManoRajuPD @chesaboudin & @sfbar to implement the "Be The Jury" pilot program if AB 1452 becomes law! /7

Thank you to @PhilTing & @Scott_Wiener for your leadership, and we look forward to building a San Francisco where our juries reflect our City's incredible diversity. Because a truly just legal system is accessible to all, regardless of the size of one's wallet. /8
