Fernando had his license suspended but like so many others, knew that to provide for his family, he needed to drive. He lived in fear of getting pulled over, and when he was driving his 7-months pregnant wife, his worst fears were realized.

They were pulled over and Fernando was arrested and jailed solely for driving on a suspended license, due to inability to pay past court debt. Not having a license led to multiple arrests and incarcerations, but he persisted and came to one of our clinics!

After Fernando got his license back, he had been dedicated to making sure this doesn’t happen to other people. We’re so grateful he’s joining us in this campaign to end driver license suspensions for inability to pay court debt.

Fernando submitted testimony in the Texas Legislature that helped pass a bill to reduce the suspension period for departmental suspensions. It used to be 2 years, soon it will be 90 days. We’re working to get rid of it entirely.

The departmental suspension program makes no sense. It automatically suspends licenses when a person pleads guilty to driving while license invalid (i.e. when a person goes to court and takes care of their ticket). So taking responsibility for the ticket means another suspension.

Anyway, Fernando is back driving legally, with a thriving business and a beautiful family. It’s pretty awesome he’s also using his time to support change so other people don’t go through what he has.
