DC's agencies should work for the people, but in order to do that, they need to hear from DC residents.
On January 26 join us for "All About Oversight Season," a virtual discussion about the oversight process and how every DC resident can be part of it. bit.ly/all-about-over

Regardless of who’s in the DC Council, we still have to push our representatives to deliver for those most impacted by systemic oppression. We also hope to see more commitment to holding D.C. agencies accountable for truly serving community needs.

#OnElections Elissa Silverman’s loss creates a gap in leadership in the Labor & Workforce Development Committee.
It is our hope that the new chair prioritizes the well-being, financial security, & dignity of workers & households with low incomes.

#OnElections Initiative 82: D.C. voters overwhelmingly voted “yes” to match the minimum wage for tipped workers to the minimum wage for non-tipped workers. The new Council has the opportunity to uphold democracy and honor the wishes of the voters.

#OnElections secured over 71K votes across the city winning an at-large seat on the Council. Our hope is that he continues to focus on racial equity through innovative solutions.

Earlier this month, D.C. voters cast their ballots and the results brought changes in membership to the DC Council in Wards 3 and 5, opened up a vacancy for Labor & Workforce Development Committee chair, and solidified that D.C. voters support increased wages for tipped workers.

Sickening and worrying. A French far-right MP yelled at NUPES MP Carlos Martens Bilongo to "return to Africa". The Assembly was shocked. The session was suspended.

There’s a point when you have to ask: if the homeless services system isn’t designed to handle shocks cause by concrete on-the-ground conditions where it operates, then maybe the system is just poorly designed…

I’ve feel like I’ve spent the last 5 years hearing people talk about what the homeless services system *isn’t* designed to do. Affordable housing crisis? Homeless service isn’t for solving that. Links to sustainable housing? No. Immigrants? They have different needs, so also no.

If you live in a building owned or operated by DARO, you won’t much longer — the company must transfer management of all properties it owns to a 3rd party within 18 months. It also permanently bars the companies from owning any interest in a property management company in DC.

DCHA has, for at least as long as I've been covering it, very cynically acknowledged residents' housing concerns, creating a disingenuous dichotomy between housing people and *safely* housing them: "If homes are really that bad, we couldn't possibly make them live there!"

I mean, this was an article in the *Public Housing Authorities Directors Association*. Watching officials react to this HUD report with pearl-clutching has been baffling -- this plan was no secret. And not many publicly condemned it! phada.org/Publications/B

The high vacancy rates at DCHA exist in part *by design*: the city wanted some (if not most, or all) public housing to die by attrition so that it could move forward with plans to redevelop it. This trend is the opposite of an accident.

This is why oversight matters. The HUD report laid out what anyone in the constellation of working with DCHA already knew. This is information that the Council, mayor's office, etc had access to:
