Also, we can wander about a lot of things but, experience is (maybe) the only thing we can’t take to be an illusion.. so, regardless of belief, it doesn’t really make sense to say that “it’s not there.”

Especially the experience of suffering -- suffering in particular is the one thing that can't be an illusion. And I have very little patience for any non-dual mumbo-jumbo that attempts to undermine the reality of suffering.

Anyone using no-self as an excuse that suffering isn't real has clearly not descended into the depths of hell and investigated it for themselves, and is just repeating some dogma that they don't understand because they want to appear more spiritual. Barf.

from what I've read, in Soto Zen it's called the "encouragement stick" (kyosaku) but in Rinzai Zen it's called the "admonishment stick" (keisaku)

Rinzai seems to have much less use for euphemisms and a very heavy emphasis on direct pointing. That's the school that has a greater love koans as well, where Soto seems to consider them a bit icky for some reason. Would love to hear a Rinzai-flavored explanation of "upaya".

This has been my experience as well. Rinzai seems much more serious. I agree with @KennethFolk that Dogen was probably a quack.
